Bone hormone a startling discovery for diabetes treatment

A startling new discovery about a hormone released from the bone is significantly changing scientists’ understanding of diabetes and giving new clues about how to deal with the “Big D.” Considered to be the fifth leading killer of Americans, diabetes is a disease in which the body’s failure to regulate blood sugar (glucose) can lead to serious and even fatal complications. The regulation of glucose entails the body's monitoring of how much sugar is present in a person’s blood; how much is taken up by cells for fuel; and how much is released from energy stores. These processes are performed by the pancreas, the liver, muscles, and fat. Other specific types of diabetes, which may account for 1% to 2% of all diagnosed cases, result from specific genetic syndromes, surgery, drugs, malnutrition, infections, and other illnesses. However, new research suggests that the issue is even more complex than what it seems to be. A hormone from the skeleton may influence how the body handles sugar. There is also an increasing evidence that demonstrates that the signals from the immune system, the brain and the gut play very important roles in controlling glucose and lipid metabolism. These findings are mainly relevant to Type 2 diabetes, the more common kind, which comes during adulthood. While it is true that having elevated blood sugar is the defining feature of diabetes, the reasons for abnormal sugar tend to be different from one individual to another. It is in understanding exactly what signals are involved that raises the hope of providing the right care for each person each day, rather than giving everyone the same drug. When researchers from Columbia University Medical Center published the results last summer, scientists were astounded that a hormone released from the bone may help regulate blood glucose. Lead researcher, Dr. Gerard Karsenty, first described the findings at a conference where the assembled scientists appeared to be overwhelmed by the potential implications of the study. It was the first time that the skeleton was actually seen as an endocrine organ, producing hormones that act outside of bone. In his previous work, he had shown that a hormone produced by fat, called leptin, is an important regulator of bone metabolism. In this work, he tested the idea that if fat regulates bone, bone in essence must regulate fat. His experiment with mice revealed that a previously known substance called osteocalcin, which is produced by bone, acted by sending signals to the fat cells as well as the pancreas. The net effect is to improve how mice secrete and handle insulin, the hormone that helps the body move glucose from the bloodstream into cells of the muscle and liver, where it can be used for energy or stored for future use. Insulin is also important in regulating lipids. Patients with Type 2 diabetes no longer heed the hormone’s directives due to the cells' resistance to insulin. Their blood glucose levels surge and production of insulin in the pancreas declines as well. The experiment revealed an increase in osteocalcin which addressed the twin problems of insulin resistance and low insulin production. The mice became more sensitive to insulin and it increased their insulin production, thus bringing their blood sugar down. As a bonus, it also made obese mice less fat. Should osteocalcin works in humans as well, it can be considered as a “unique new treatment” for Type 2 diabetes. Most current diabetes drugs either raise insulin production or improve insulin sensitivity, but not both. Drugs that increase production tend to make insulin resistance worse. A deficiency in osteocalcin could also turn out to be a cause of Type 2 diabetes. The immune system is considered to be another cause of glucose regulation. In 2003, researchers from two laboratories found that fat tissue from obese mice contained an abnormally large number of macrophages, immune cells that contribute to inflammation. Scientists have long suspected that inflammation was somehow related to insulin resistance, which precedes nearly all cases of Type 2 diabetes. In the early 1900s, diabetics were sometimes given high doses of aspirin, which is an anti-inflammatory. Only in the past few years has research into the relationship of obesity, inflammation and insulin resistance become a serious concern. A number of researchers agree that obesity is accompanied by a state of chronic, low-grade inflammation in which some immune cells are activated, which may be a primary cause of insulin resistance. They also agree that the main type of cell responsible for the inflammation is the macrophage. Should more research prove the initial findings to be true, there would be certainly greater hope of relief and treatment for diabetics everywhere.

Get a discount car rental enjoy

There is perhaps nothing better than getting away from the rut of every day life and going on a vacation to a new and unfamiliar place. I love the rush I get by from exporing a new place with friends or family. There is nothing worse, however, than trying to take a trip to somewhere new without using a car rental to have transportation. It has become a priority for me in making any travel plans to find a discount car rental well in advance. I have learned the hard way how hard it is to make it around a new town or city without the freedom of driving a rental car. I've learned that it is equally hard to pay a huge price for a rental car when with a little planning you can almost surely get a discount car rental. Getting a discount car rental doesn't have to be hard. All it takes is a little early planning. Begin your search for a discount car rental as soon as you know the location of your next trip. If you have already made plans for where you will stay, then talking to the concierge at that location can be a great resource for finding a discount car rental. See what kinds of deals you may be able to get because of staying at the hotel or condo you have chosen. Another great resource for finding a discount car rental is by doing an online search. There are countless websites that will offer you deals on finding a discount car rental to enjoy your next vacation. The main reason that I am an advocate of searching hard to find discount car rentals is that it frees up extra money for you to enjoy on other aspects of your vacation. There are so many things to see and so many fun experiences to have that I'm sure no one wants to put a large part of their budget into a car rental. Vacations and even business trips are meant to get us out of the stress and busyness of every day life and allow us to enjoy some of the simple pleasures that life offers. Figure out how to get a discount car rental and you'll be well on your way to enjoying a great vacation filled with too many good things to spend your money on. Take my advice. There are discount car rentals to be had, they just have to be found.

The dangers of smoking cigarettes while pregnant

Copyright 2006 Adam Waxler The sad fact is cigarette smoking is part of many of our lives, regardless of whether we smoke or not. Unfortunately, this includes unborn babies as well. Surveys show that many mothers still smoke cigarettes during their pregnancy. Most likely these women are unaware of how harmful cigarette smoking truly is on their unborn baby and are unaware that smoking cigarettes during pregnancy is one of the major causes of infant deaths in the society today. Basically, cigarette smoke alone is full of chemicals, some studies even state it has more than 2,500 chemicals. Some chemicals like tar, carbon monoxide, and nicotine are considered the most dangerous substance for the fetus. It has long been proven how these chemicals can greatly affect the development of the fetus inside the mother’s womb. First of all, mothers who smoke while pregnant run a risk of ectopic pregnancy. This is especially viable when the mother is a heavy smoker during the first trimester of her pregnancy. Ectopic pregnancy refers to the state wherein the embryo is embedded outside the uterus, which is contrary to what normal pregnancy should be. Usually, it is embedded in the fallopian tube. In this manner, the fetus has to be removed because this kind of pregnancy will never survive. This fetus will never survive outside of the uterus where a fetus gets all the nourishment and protection that it needs. Prolonging this condition will only risk the mother’s life. Also, smoking cigarettes during pregnancy increases the probability that the mother will develop complications in the placenta. Reports show that placental problems are actually happening in about 1% of pregnancies. The most common problem is “placenta previa” where the placenta is connected very low in the uterus and is almost at the cervix. Another problem with smoking cigarettes during pregnancy is the deterioration of fetal growth. The fact is cigarette smoking during pregnancy results in low infant birth weight. For many years now reports have shown that there have been significant differences between babies with mothers who smoked cigarettes during pregnancy and those who have non-cigarette smoking mothers. Unfortunately, greater risks are imposed on babies who weigh less than the normal babies. They may acquire certain diseases like cerebral palsy, mental retardation, or worse – death. There are also reports on how cigarette smoking during pregnancy increases the probabilities of birth defects such as cleft lip and cleft palate. Moreover, babies born with mothers who are cigarette smokers have higher incidences of sudden infant death syndrome. If ever these infants survive, they may still incur diseases like asthma, behavioral problems, or learning disabilities. Then there are the post-pregnancy woes… For babies with mothers who smoke regularly, problems still lurk within their environment. This is especially true to mothers who smoke even when they are breastfeeding their babies. Studies have revealed that nicotine can be passed on to the baby through breastfeeding. There have been experiments that prove the presence of nicotine in the babies system through urine testing. It later showed that there is a higher percentage of nicotine found on babies who breastfeed to cigarette smoking mothers. Most experts contend that the problem lies within the mother’s urge to get back to smoking cigarettes right after she gives birth. Unfortunately, when the mother continues to smoke during the formative years of her child life, chances are she is already shaping a child that will most likely be a cigarette smoker themselves. So, what’s the point here? The fact that the mother does not care for her own health is one thing. But the fact that she puts greater risk on her baby because of her vice is another thing. Babies should be given the right to live a decent, normal, and healthy life. So, for the “moms-to-be” out there, please keep in mind that your babies should not be forced to suffer from the long range dangers associated with cigarette smoking. Let’s take care of them by not smoking cigarettes.

Online poker guaranteed tournaments

Mansion has shown its commitment to developing the Asia Pacific timezone market by shifting the schedules of its USD100,000 daily guaranteed tournaments. On 19 March 2007 (Monday), only 350 players registered for this tournament (the buy-in is only USD100) - To break even for these daily events Mansion requires 1000 players!!! This therefore represents significant player value for players playing at such timings. If the 8:00p. m. GMT guaranteed tournaments are included, Mansion averages 529 players per day and even then the prizes are still very significant in value for the individual player. As per most tournaments the top 10% of players are paid-off, so this means that you have to beat a fairly small field to be ‘in the money’. In fact this allows for more interesting tournaments as well, players will find. A quick view of the names of the players’ lists show that the scheduling as such attracts different players from different parts of the globe. This makes it more interesting for the dedicated players amongst you who may wish to play a larger variety of players. On Mansion’s part, all indications are that Mansion too is succeeding in attracting more players to play in its online poker rooms. Kudos to Mansion for its commitment to developing its online poker market through quality scheduling and high value tournaments. Mansion has upped the ante on its rivals and it is hoped that more online poker rooms would commit to developing the Asia Pacific market – small matters like scheduling go a long way to creating opportunity for players in this region.

End your hard water nightmares with a water softener

Are you tired of finding spots on your dishes and glasses after washing them with your dishwasher? Are you tired of having stiff clothes after washing them with your washing machine? Are you tired of being unable to get your surfaces cleaned because of the build up of scales? All this could be the result of "hard water" that you use for the washing of your dishes, washing of your clothes and cleaning of your surfaces. To solve these problems, it is necessary for you to use water softeners to ease the problem of "hard water". In case you haven't heard about the wonders of water softeners, you should know that they are very important in helping you to solve the above problems and other problems caused by "hard water". As the name implies, water softeners are used to "soften" water. As easy as it sounds, most of the water that is available for use is "hard water". Water hardness simply refers to water that is hard. In more technical terms, it is water that has a high mineral content. Water hardness is normally measured in grains per gallon (GPG), parts per million (PPM), or milligrams per liter (MG/L) Any water that measures 3.5 to 7 GPG when tested can be termed "hard water". Minerals that cause water hardness include calcium and magnesium. Water softeners therefore help to soften the water, thereby preventing the above mentioned problems regarding your dishes, clothes. This process works by replacing ions of the minerals that cause the hardness of the water with softer ions. Water softeners can be expensive, but if you look at the benefits, it is a worthy investment. The price of home water softeners depends, to a great deal, on the type, size and make. With constant use of water softeners you can be sure of better results for your dishes, clothes, surfaces, etc. Why not go for a water softener today?

Asia boom us bust buffeting australian economy

SYDNEY (AFP) — Boom in Asia and bust in the United States are buffeting Australia's economy, Prime Minister Kevin Rudd warned Monday as he outlined plans to rein in inflation. In his first major speech on the economy since his Labor party swept John Howard's conservatives out of office in November, Rudd pledged to slash government spending to produce a huge budget surplus. The target would be a surplus of 1.5 percent of gross domestic product in the financial year to June 2009, he said -- about 18 billion dollars (15.8 billion US dollars). At the same time, the government has vowed to honour election pledges for 31 billion dollars in tax cuts. Rudd told business leaders at a breakfast meeting in Perth that Australia faced "conflicting economic currents." These were: "A global economy (led by the United States) which appears to be slowing. An ongoing terms of trade boom driven by Asia Pacific economies. And significant domestic inflationary pressures at home." Accusing the outgoing government of having allowed these pressures to build, Rudd said his five-point plan included incentives to encourage private savings while tackling skills shortages and infrastructure bottlenecks. Rudd, who described himself as a fiscal conservative during the election campaign, said producing the budget surplus -- up from the 1.0 percent target of the previous government -- would require discipline. "That will require a determined, disciplined approach to spending and a hardline-approach to savings," adding that his "razor gang" would cut wasteful spending. Inflation is expected to exceed the Reserve Bank of Australia's target range of 2-3 percent this year, raising the prospect of further interest rate rises by the central bank. Rates are at an 11-year high of 6.75 percent after two 25 basis point increases last year, and the effect on mortgage-belt voters is believed to have played a part in the ouster of the previous government. Rudd noted that the downturn in the economic outlook in the US, Europe and Japan comes as strong growth in the Asia-Pacific region is continuing to drive demand for Australia's rich mineral and energy resources. "Over coming years, developments in China will increasingly shape both global and Australian economic conditions," he said. "The Indian economy has become one of our fastest growing export markets and is expected to continue to post impressive rates of economic growth. "Combined, China and India accounted for around 40 percent of Australia's export value growth in 2006-07." This economic expansion in the region had heightened the need for careful management of the domestic economy, he said. "And the most pressing economic challenge domestically is inflation."
